Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced the appointment of Mr Gordon Penfold as Senior Vice President, Information Technology (IT).

Based in Etihad’s head office in Abu Dhabi, Mr Penfold will lead the airline’s IT team, responsible for optimising the airline’s technology and communications framework in line with its business strategy and objectives, as well as strategic IT development, delivery and maintenance for the airline.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “As Etihad continues to grow and mature as a business, IT strategy and service delivery will have a strong impact on our bottom line performance.

“Mr Penfold’s extensive experience in aviation IT means he is well qualified to lead Etihad through the next stage of its business development, including strengthening the airline’s strategic relationships with outsourcing partners to achieve ongoing efficiencies and innovation across the business.”

Mr Penfold has more than 30 years’ experience in the field of IT. He joins Etihad from a career spanning 13 years with British Airways, where he most recently held the position of Chief Technology Officer. He previously held senior sales, marketing and operations roles with Fujitsu Inc, and commenced his career as a Defence contractor.

Mr Penfold holds an Honours degree in Economics and Law from the University of London, and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Brunel University.
