egyptAt least 16 people died in protests across Egypt on Sunday, including eight in clashes between opponents and supporters of President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo, the health ministry said on Monday.

A further three people died in the central province of Assiut and one in each of the provinces of Fayoum, Beni Sueif and Kafr el-Sheikh.

One protester suffocated to death at the rally outside the presidential palace in Cairo and another died of wounds in the coastal city of Alexandria, the ministry said.

The U.S. State Department and UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office have urged citizens to cancel travel plans to or within Egypt.

The announcement came from American government after five people – including an American student – were killed at the weekend during violent clashes.

Despite the weekend’s unrest, UK’s Foreign Office has warned against all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai and against all but essential travel to the Governorate of South Sinai, excepting some resort and tourism areas.
