The UAE, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) received in Montreal, Canada, on the evening of 28th September 2013, global delegations participating in the 38th session of the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The reception gala was held under the auspices of H.E. Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy and Chairman of GCAA. The gala took place at the historic Windsor Station in Montreal which was transformed into a futuristic venue to match the theme of the UAE election campaign.
Diplomats from over 190 countries attending the events were greeted by H.E Sutlan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, H.E Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi. Director General of GCAA, Ms. Laila Hareb, Assistant Director General Strategy & International Affairs, Capt. Aysha Al Hamili, UAE permanent representative to ICAO, and a number of GCAA delegates.
H.E. Al Mansouri in his opening speech at the reception said that “United Arab Emirates stands for synchronized global cooperation, and constantly seeks opportunities to extend bridges with the global international community. This is reflected in the theme we chose for this Assembly “Building the Future of Civil Aviation Together”.
He added that UAE has endeavored to develop the infrastructure of this sector and encourage initiatives so as to improve methods for ensuring security and safety. Further, he expressed the wish of the UAE to be re-nominated for the membership of the new ICAO Council, category 3, in the elections to be held on October 2nd.
H.E Saif Al Suwaidi said during the event: “We, in the UAE, encourage regional and international cooperation, communication with countries in all fields related to the civil aviation sector, including sharing experiences, training, project execution, joint programs, specialized conferences and others. This is due to our belief in the global and transnational nature of this sector.”
A special award was given on behalf of UAE to ICAO Council President Mr. Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez in recognition for his contributions throughout his 9-year tenure as ICAO Council President and his figure print to build constructive dialogue among ICAO Member States.
The Gala Dinner was attended by approximately 1300 delegates. It included a state-of-art 3D mapping projection show introducing the latest developments in the UAE civil aviation sector and also a heritage area which included henna drawings, oysters and pearls stations and traditional music.
The UAE, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is currently participating in the meetings of the 38th session of the General Assembly of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is held between 24th September and 4th October. This reception is part of UAE’s election campaign to win a seat in ICAO council for the 3rd consecutive time. Elections of the council member states will be held in October 2nd.
Ms. Laila Hareb, Assistant Director General, addressed the crowd with an inspirational speech on unity to achieve the common goals in global civil aviation. She said: “The future of civil aviation will not be achieved without an imperative component .. the future of civil aviation requires us to work together, in a progressive and harmonized manner.”
At the end of the show, two business class tickets were drawn from the raffle to be won by a lucky attendee. The tickets were compliments of Etihad Airways.
During the event, guest had a chance to answer a survey on the gala, an outstanding 94% demonstrated their ultimate satisfaction with the evening planning, program, entertainment and so on.
It is worth mentioning that The UAE chose for this assembly to promote the theme of: “Building the Future of Aviation Together”. The futuristic theme was carried throughout the event from sending video invitations to guests, to setting up a “hologram” at the ICAO to spread invitations as well as a number of hi-tech eye-stoppers installations at the event venue.
