Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, has won the Best Innovation Award at the second annual Middle East IT Excellence Awards held by the International Data Corporation (IDC) – a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events, providing strategic insights for over 50 years for the information technology and consumer technology markets – in Dubai recently.
In its fifth Big Data win in less than one year, Gulf Air was recognized for its implementation of ‘Big Data Cloud with Arabic Sentiment Analysis’ that leverages Big Data technology to monitor and analyze Gulf Air’s online Arabic dialogue. Created using open source Big Data solutions, the highlight of the pioneering system is its unique ability to handle the complexity of the Arabic language by factoring colloquial forms, including regional dialects and informal phrases, into the analysis.
Receiving the award, Gulf Air Director of Information Technology Dr. Jassim Haji commented, “This award reinforces our achievements in information technology development – vital in the aviation industry today. With the help of Big Data we are continuing to improve our services in order to meet the evolving needs of our passengers by utilizing newer and smarter technologies to facilitate their travel experiences.”
Gulf Air’s Big Data has seen the airline win in the category of ‘Big Data Solution Project’ at GITEX Technology – a renowned IT expo that has been running for the past 33 years – in addition to winning the ‘Implementation of the Year’ Award from Arabian Computer News for Hospitality & Tourism (the second consecutive win for the airline in this category), ‘Achievement of Year’ from Computer News Middle East Magazine (CNME) for the airline’s implementation of Big Data on a Cloud Computing platform and Bahrain’s MEET ICT Excellence Award for the ‘Best Online Application for Business and Commerce.
Bahrain’s national carrier Gulf Air has been at the forefront of introducing several improvement and innovations in its operations. The airline was the first organization in Bahrain to introduce Private Cloud Computing in its IT operations that enables it to achieve much faster and more efficient business performance, resulting in enhanced customer service in every step of the passenger’s journey.
